Originally there was a lifeboat on Kelleys Island, South Bass Island (Put-in-Bay) and on Marblehead Peninsula.

One of two remaining Francis Metallic Lifeboats
in the United States, this method of lifesaving predates the U.S. Coast Guard. On display in the Boat Building.

"Ironclad" is turned upside down to show bottom runners.

Before air travel, the "ironclad,"
a row boat built with metal runners,
was used to haul the mail, freight and even passengers over the ice in the winter.
On display in the Boat Building.
